Manx Bay Festival June 2010

Just back from Sunday afternoon at the Manx Bay Festival. It was FAB! We three are all absolutely knackered but it was well worth it!

The dance acts were amazing (Signature, Stavros Flatley, Diversity) and the singers equally enjoyable (Eoghan Quigg, Danyl Johnson, Ruth Lorenzo and Olly Murs). Sadly George Sampson couldn't make it due to illness so DJ Ironik stood in for him. DJ Ironik is slightly out of my musical comfort zone but still a good time was had by all.

Voiceover man from the X Factor, Peter Dickinson, presented the acts and was quite entertaining - I was hoping to report that he had been RUDDY HILARIOUS but there was something missing. He didn't do enough talking with his 'voiceover' voice and imho spoke too long in between the acts.

So that's that. After all the hype and build up over the past few weeks and months, it's finally over, gone (well technically it's not over until tonight as the 80's show is on now, but as we're not going to be there bopping away to Rick Astley and Boy George, it's over. Finito.)

I can't wait to listen to the radio tomorrow to hear the feedback and comments from people. Plus it'll be a laugh to hear the DJ's talking with croaky voices. I wonder what Alex Brindley sounds like with a husky voice. He certainly looks quite delish in the flesh, so to speak!!!

Hast it really been 2 years?

Crikey. I hadn't realised that it has been so long since I posted. I've been in a pretty bad funk these last 18 months or more, due to both my physical pain and deteriorated mental health resulting from the relentless pain! Hard to explain this to anybody who hasn't really suffered in the same way: picture if you will, a bear with a sore head, chinese water torture and a good poke in the eye and it barely touches the surface of my day to day nonsense. But hey-ho, that's life!

There is some hope. I've recently started on some new meds so hopefully I won't be such a miserable cow and will enjoy going out more. I have continued to craft these past few years but haven't felt like sharing, talking, socialising etc.. with anybody. Even Mr CB and the 'notsolittle' Little Miss CB have been 'spared' my company outside of the house but I'm trying my best to rectify this while I'm in a positive frame of mind. Even joining a club/guild might be within reach! Steady on girl.

Speaking of going out...The Manx Bay Festival is on this coming weekend and we three are going to see the X Factor/Britain's Got Talent show. Can't wait! Wish I could manage to see the some of the other acts too but I know my limitations.

The recent sunshine on the Island has been a real boost. Although I'm not a fan of heat (living in Spain for 6 years was enough for me thank you very much!) I have been out in the garden as much as I can tolerate and have finally lost that deathly anaemic pale thing I had going on. Looks cool when you're 16 but not so good when you're approaching the big 40!

Finally finished planting the last of the plants that Mr CB and Little Miss CB bought about 6 weeks ago - between us we potted up 6 planters with Geraniums, Nicotinia, Petunias & Begonias, and even managed to squeeze 3 small hanging baskets with the last few plants. In days gone by I would have completed this in a weekend (perhaps) and although the slow progress has been frustrating (much like typing on this poxy keyboard - hate it) the hard work is done and the plants are beginning to flower. Nice!

So there you have it. I may post again soon if I feel up to it. I may not. Just taking each day as it comes for now. Definitely an improvement on taking each day hour by hour.

It's been a while but in my defence I've been really Really REALLY busy! Apart from a few custom orders on Etsy, the recent Agricultural Show, the summer hols and the usual humdrum of life I've spent the last few days learning more about Paint.Net. I downloaded a shed load of plug-ins and the latest update and boy is this fun!! Here's some examples of what I've made. The 'Carlos Tevez' skin is a work in progress for Katie's Bebo. Enjoy!

Custom Needle Felted Dodo

This pretty little Needle Felted Dodo is a custom order for a lady on Etsy whose hubby is bonkers about Dodo's!

I started with a rough sketch of what I imagined a dodo would look like. I focused on the large butt, small wings, short legs and humongous beak! This photo mosaic shows the process from start to finish, including a sneaky peek at the sketch, the initial core of fiberfill and building up the layers:

As part of this custom order, I made a smaller dodo which is intended to be used as a keychain. However, when I made it in similar colours to the 'mummy' bird, it didn't look right. So I decided to make him looking like a baby birdie:

And finally, the two of them together. Awww...

Honestly I could have spent hours and hours posing the two of them and taken 100's of photos. There's a few more pics on my Flickr if you want to check them out.

Needle Felted Skulls

Over the past few months I've continued to sculpt various pieces with needle felting. I really like this medium and it's possible to achieve great results and effects without much mess (unless you consider being knee deep in wool a mess)...

Here are a few basic skull beads that I made a while back. They were needled quite firmly to the point that they feel like high density polystyrene. They weigh practically nothing and are great fun to embellish with embroidery if you fancy a 'dia de los muertos' look.

I'm still waiting on the perfect project to add these to and an excuse to make even more. But for now, enjoy this sneaky peek at my geekery!

Cluster Necklace for Craftster swap

I signed up at the last minute last week for a swap taking part over on Craftster for 'friends of craftster'.

It should be interesting as the items are posted on the Gallery first. Then, one by one the names are drawn from a hat, a prize is drawn from a hat and the two are paired up.

Here is my contribution, a cluster of red beads which includes a mix of glass, plastic, ceramic and seed beads.

One of the participants in the swap said the beads reminded them of pomegranite seeds! And I think they're right.

The beads have a lovely golden hue to them. Just wish I could remember where I bought them now! Lol.

Mi logo es loco!

Playing around on the computer today as my back needed a rest from felting, I had a bit of fun creating a new logo for my shop tags.

The inspiration comes from my most favourite felted item. I used a photo of my latest toadstool pincushion (which is presently listed in my Etsy shop, wink wink)....

I then 'traced' over the photo using some photo editing software....

and coloured it in using Paint. Et voila! A new original piece of artwork to use as I see fit.

I thought that I could use it to decorate sales labels and stickers for my felted goods and other wares.

What do you think? Is it too frivilous? I wanted something that represents what I'm making and selling right now. I had been using the fairy avatar as my identifying feature, but as I'm not selling fairies she didn't seem to have a 'relationship' with my stuff.

OK, so maybe it's a work in proress, but it's a start. Feedback would be great. Let me have it, but play nice - I'm a delicate soul! Lol.

Three Scarves Fulled & the Six Foot Tall Lightbox

I love these two pictures. They were both taken in our porch which we hardly ever use (apart from storing junk in!).

The light in there is perfect, kind of like a 6 foot tall lightbox! Amazing... where oh where have I been to miss this one!

Just listed the wrap at the front and the scarf at the back in my Etsy shop. The middle one will be listed later on this week.

I'm just finishing off some felted pouches for Nintendo DS lite games, cameras etc.. and will hopefully be able to add them tomorrow.

I've just listed this needle felted toadstool pincushion in my Etsy shop.

It's a simplified design of the original pincushion which was a gift for a friend during a pincushion swap last year. There isn't as much detail as the original as I wanted an affordable version which took less than a day to make. I hope I haven't oversimplified it... we'll see how it goes.

I've just received an email from the editor of Lets Knit saying that I've won a Hobby Craft Knitting Basket from the giveaways. I never usually win these things so this is a real treat. Light blue corsage in BFL wool. Large flower with brooch pin attahced to back. Suitable for bags, hats and lapels. Center is embellished with beads & embroidery.

Rose Garden corsage in shades of green and pink BFL wool. Large flower with brooch pin attached to back. Suitable for bags, hats and lapels. As before, center is embellished with beads & embroidery.

Arrangement of button flowers, a new take on an old idea. Small terracotta pot painted with blue and white acrylic paint. Flowers are wired and entire arrangement is secure. The base of the pot has a felt backing to protect surfaces.

Pink & blue BFL wool, hand rolled felt, cut and shaped into rose. Entire piece is stitched securely onto a 'hat' pin and can be used to embellish just about anything. Not suitable for very delicate or gauze fabrics due to size of pin. Great for bags, hats and jackets alike.

Shades of blue, large felted flower corsage. Needle felted flower, using BFL, Merino & Silk. As before, center is embellished with beads & embroidery. Corsage has a brooch pin attached to back and can be used to decorate bags, hats, jackets etc..

ISE6 scarf & goodies received!

I received the most gorgeously soft scarf from my pal Jesi at the end of last week. My photos aren't great as things have been a bit difficult at home. But here's a quick glimpse of the beautiful scarf and goodies that she sent me.

The scarf is knit in Henry's Attic natural silk and Jesi used the opera scarf pattern. It is so soft, smoothy, silky and light. Jesi left it in its natural colour and has left it with me to decide whether to tea dye it or not. I may keep it natural for now and then see how things go. It's got a lovely pearlescent quality to it, almost like mother of pearl.

As you can see, Jesi also enclosed a few treats for me: a box of candles, some jasmine green tea and some gorgeous laceweight cashmere yarn. The candles are divine with a lovely fragrance. Not at all sickly like some smelly candles - just lovely and fresh.

The laceweight yarn is the original yarn that Jesi bought for my scarf but she didn't enjoy knitting with it. Thankfully she has let me have it - I adore the colours and can't wait to get knitting a nice scarf or shawlette for myself.

Thanks so much Jesi. I wish I was able to get a better photo of me wearing the scarf but it does look lovely (plus it covers the 'lads' perfectly!!) lol.

Felting goodies

I'm busy making some felt goodies for my Etsy shop at the moment and will post info when ready. For now though, here's a sneak preview of my experiements and test swatches. Enjoy!

Ok, it doesn't look like much, but trust me, I've been a busy felter. There's bags, flowers, cushion covers, felted soaps (with lovely wooden soap dishes) and wallhangings all in the making.

I've also been playing around with some BFL roving for the first time, as well as a merino/silk blend. Check out Needleworks Pleasure on ebay for her selection of affordable handpainted roving. They're gorgeous!!! And I'm hooked on the merino/silk blend... oh sooooo sooooft!

Knitting: Icarus Shawl washed & blocked

I can't believe it's been 3 weeks since I last posted. Eek! Well, I have been busy.... busy riding the knitting mojo wave and making the most of it while it lasts. Seriously, you will not believe how much I have knit in the past few weeks. Oodles!

Here's the first of a long line of FOs and I'll post piccies of the rest as and when I get a moment.

I'm so pleased with this shawl and will definitely knit one for myself in 4ply or sockyarn. I have to admit that I'm a little less than thrilled with the yarn. There wasn't much give when blocking this shawl, unlike the FCS. Perhaps it's because the yarn was a laceweight single ply as opposed to the 4ply sockyarn that I used for FCS. Well, whatever. I think it looks great, even though the points are not as pointy!

I blocked it as hard as I could and hopefully my ISE6 pal will like it. For more information and details about this pattern, check out my Flickr photostream.

Magknits Pattern Archives

I was trying to find a Magknits pattern earlier today via Google Cache but I couldn't. I did eventually find what I wanted via 'archive.org' where a copy of each issue of Magknits up to August 2007 has been saved. Here's how it works:

Go to www.archive.org and type www.magknits.com in the search box.

The search results will literally be a list of dates that are displayed in a table. It doesn't look like much but by clicking on one of the dates you will be redirected to an archived copy of that issue of Magknits.

Unless you want to visit each issue of Magknits that has been archived, try to find the publication date of the pattern you're looking for. You can do this by doing a Google search for Magknits [+pattern-name].

Once you have the publication date, go back to archive.com and click on the date in the table. This will redirect you to an archived copy of that issue of Magknits.

From there you simply click on the Pattern button in the header to see the patterns for that issue. I haven't checked every single issue, but what I've seen so far looks just like it did when the magazine was live.

NB You won't be able to navigate from one issue of Magknits to the next in the archive. You will have to access each issue via www.archive.org.

There may be a quicker way out there to find an archived copy of a particular pattern or issue, as each web page that is published has its own unique address or URL and if I find one I'll share it.

Comfort Shawl (knitting daily)

I finally got round to blocking the Comfort Shawl by Sandi Wiseheart on Knitting Daily, which I started 6 weeks ago. If only I had actually been 'knitting daily', it would have been finished a lot sooner. Never mind. It will be winging its way to Spain this week.

This shawl was my first dip into lace shawl knitting and it gave me the confidence and motivation to try something more involved... namely the Icarus Shawl and Forest Canopy Shawl!

I wanted to retain a comfortable and casual feel and the Denim Aran was perfect for this. Plus at over 230 yds per 100g ball, and having only used 1 1/2 balls, it was a very affordable knit. The yarn is a blend of acrylic (60%) cotton (25%) and wool (15%) so it isn't a complete affront to yarn snobs!! ;) I am pleased that the shawl has blocked so well considering it isn't 100% wool.

It seems that I am on a roll at the moment and have found my knitting mojo. Does anybody fancy a rub?

ISE6: Forest Canopy Shawl finished

Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once more... I absolutely adore this pattern and can't recommend it enough as a great beginners lace shawl project. It would also make a quick knit for more experienced lace knitters.

To my surprise, my non-attention span coped with the pattern repeat. I took my time and completed the shawl in two weeks. I imagine the next one will fly off the needles (she says hopefully!).

FCS grows pretty quickly and I can't wait to start another one using DK weight yarn and bigger needles.

Blocking this shawl was fun, if a little bit of a challenge. I've never blocked a triangle shawl before and I got there in the end thanks to Yarnharlot, Eunnyjang and Morehouse Merino.

I do hope my ISE pal will like it.

Craftster journal swap, 2nd journal made

Check out the 2nd journal I made for the Craftster 'Make me a journal' swap. This was made especially for 'Karia' who didn't receive a journal from her spoiler. Hopefully it should have arrived by now and she will like it.

I also included an empty sweety box which I filled with ideas and journalling prompts for days when inspiration is lacking. I downloaded the ideas sheet from www.milliande.com and printed them out onto coloured paper. Milliande.com is a fun resource for art and writing stuff. Check it out if you get a mo.

I'm getting better at the coptic stitch binding and I used STR wool to bind this journal instead of embroidery thread. The stitch definition is much better with a thicker yarn or thread. There are more details about the journal on my Flickr page. Thanks for looking. x

Knitting: Shawls & Caplets (with PHOTOS)

I recently finished the 'Comfort Shawl' for my mum. When mum fell and broke her arm and leg a few weeks ago, I immediately wanted to knit her something. I knew she needed a bed jacket that she could wear with the ease of a shawl. Thanks to the clever shaping of the 'Comfort Shawl' it sits comfortably on your shoulders. It was an enjoyable knit and I especially liked how it was constructed. I will try to post some photos later when things are a little quieter here.

Mum has had both of her casts removed - the leg cast was rmoved after 4 weeks and the arm after 6 weeks. Amazing! She's like a giant bandaid and heals so quickly. Lucky woman. The weather is still a little cool in the evenings in Spain so she should be able to get a couple of months wear out of the shawl before putting it away for the Autumn/Winter.

With my new found confidence for shawl knitting, I decided it was time to tackle something bigger. So after a bit of investigation, I chose the Icarus Shawl from The Best of Interweave Knits (the one on the cover). I'm about 25% in, using a laceweight merino yarn that I bought last year from Ebay (I think the seller was called 'Yarn Wise'). I am enjoying knitting this top down shawl and it feels right, you know what I mean?

Not happy with one WIP on the needles, I cast on the Forest Canopy Shawl this morning which I purchased and downloaded yesterday. I'm knitting this in 'Gemini Knits' sockyarn and the pattern is so easy to follow (I can see how more experienced knitters find this a 'quick' knit). What was I so afraid of?

Thankfully both of these shawls are progressing well so far. I clearly wasn't ready for lace shawls last year. Maybe this year I am!

Cellulitis

I've just been to the Doctor as I have had pain, swelling, redness and heat in my thigh since last Thursday. Turns out I have Cellulitis.

In the past 4 days it has spread from the size of a 10p piece to practically the front of my left thigh! I can't believe how much it hurts, and the heat coming off this thing is as bad as sunburn!

We have just been to the chemist to pick up my antibiotics and I'm off to rest now as I feel a little euck! I am assured that the infection will respond quickly to the antibiotics - usually within taking 4 tablets. The nurse has kindly drawn a lovely outline around the infected area so that we can check if it's spreading or not.

More soon and maybe even a photo! Just need to find the batteries for the camera. Lol!

With Wool Winder I Wound Wool!!!

It's the little things in life that make me happy. Grape Hyacinths in Spring; Little Miss CB's sleeping face; yarncakes. YARNCAKES??? Yup. Yarncakes! I love yarncakes. They're just so darn pretty!

Anyway, I got off to a shaky start due to a slight technical hitch with the winder. See the photo? The grey and white cogs aren't meshing at all and they should be. I bent the metal bar with my pliers so that the grey cog tipped forward to touch the white one and this fixed the problem.....

.....and as you can see from the pretty yarncake, it's working fine now. Sigh! Isn't she lovely. :)

So big thanks to some extremely helpful online friends with the same model. They took the time to take photos and post them online so that I could compare their model to mine. Thanks ladies!

Time to wind me some wool. I think Katie and I shall be fighting over who gets to crank the handle! ;)

Have Wool Winder... Will Wind Wool

Yay! My Wool Winder arrived this morning. I bought it off ebay for a tenner at the weekend. Finally I can wind my beautiful skeins into pretty yarncakes.

I had intended to buy one at auction but I got so impatient waiting for the auctions to end and after being out bid on a few occasions I asked nay begged Mr CB if I could just buy one. He obliged, naturally!!! ;) (hmm, what's he after?)

Off to wind some wool now. You may not see or hear from me for quite a while (unless it all goes horribly wrong and I end up in a tangled fibery mess). Anything is possible so fingers crossed!

March Swap - Fat Quarters

And finally.... the last post for today is a picture of the fabric that I received from my swap pal as part of the March swap on the CTnY forum.

I received 3 gorgeous Fat Quarters that coordinate with each other, as well as some pretty beads and buttons keeping with the theme.

Everything was tied up in a pretty red ribbon. The 'sheep' on the tag must be the clue to my spoiler who I think was Franney, but will have to double check.

The little pink and black box is adorable. I'm guessing my pal made this. We've only ever made mini boxes out of recycled Christmas cards so they've never looked that great. I'm really impressed with this little pink and black number so will have to keep it in mind next time I make one.

I was late sending out my package to my swap pal but hopefully it will make it there safely before the end of next week (fingers crossed)!

And now I am officially up to date with all swaps etc..

Fabric Covered Easter Egg, No2

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was making some 'fresh' fabric covered egg decorations for our home as the last batch I made were about 4 yrs old and a little manky.

As it turned out I managed to make two which I then sent to live elsewhere. The pink & blue egg below was sent to Hanne in Finland, as part of her Round Robin bag for March. It arrived with her a couple of days late for Easter but I think it was still appreciated.

The pink tasselled egg from this post was given to my FILs partner 'C'.

I might have run out of time due to bad planning, but at least I've got a headstart on next years Easter decorations. There's plenty of time and fabric leftover to make decorations for our own home.

How's that for a positive spin. My therapist would be proud!!! ;)

ISE6 - Yarn Purchased

The yarn I ordered before Easter arrived yesterday, all beautifully wrapped and packed. Two yarn cakes of 4ply merino sock yarn from Sarah (Gemini Knits) in various shades of blue, blue and blue!

Sarah is lovely and extremely helpful, even winding the skeins into lovely center pull balls for me (I really don't enjoy winding skeins of 4ply yarn by hand off the back of a chair!)

Blue seems to be the dominant colour on the ISE6 blog so far and I'm amazed at the progress some people have already made!

Now, as per usual, I will be 'umming' and 'awing' for the next few days trying to decide which colourway to use for my pal's scarf. Time to knit me some swatches!

It's scarf exchange time again! I'm helping out as a hostess in this round as I wanted to return some of the crafty kharma following the wonderful Angel package I received from Martha in ISE5.

I received my spoilee's details early by the very organised Tami and have been in contact with my pal via email. I am really looking forward to this round and have pretty much cleared my swapping schedule so that I can concentrate on this fully.

Fabric Covered Easter Egg

A few years back I began making fabric covered Easter eggs to decorate the 'wiggily' willow branches in our conservatory. It's been 4 years since the last batch which are quite frankly beginning to look a bit tatty. So, time to get the polystyrene eggs out and begin crafting some new ones.

Here's the first one which I made last night/this morning. The egg is about 2.5" tall but the overall decoration measures 10" from tip of hanging thread to base of tassle.

I really like the style of this one. In the past I've used more pins, beads & sequins to hold everything in place - like you do with Pinflair eggs - but I'm very pleased with the outcome of this one. I'll have to make a few more in coordinating colours to use up some of my patchwork cottons!

I didn't have a filigree cap for the top of the egg so I crocheted something similar out of embroidery threads with my wee metal hook! It's only a teeny thing and my eyes were burning while I made it (and that was using the magnifiying glass on my daylight lamp!!)

The tassle was easy enough to make and although this one is less than perfect, it'll do. I used about 1/2 a skein of embroidery thread wrapped around a 2.5" piece of card. There's a wooden bead under the 'bulb' of the tassle to give it its shape which I then covered with a fabric yo-yo (of sorts) and then chain stitched around the edge to tidy it up.

Everything used was from my craft stash, apart from the polystyrene eggs which I bought in January from e-bay.

I've got a few needle felted eggs which Katie & I made in January. I must take some piccies of them and load them up. They're really sweet. Katie is quite the dab hand with a felting needle!

A few weeks ago mum fell and broke her right ankle and fractured her right wrist. I couldn't go and visit her when it first happened but I'm finally off to see her today.

Swaps: ISE5 Angel scarf & goodies - piccies!

It's been a busy few days in Casa Craftybernie. In between sleeping as I get over the dreaded 'lurgy and keeping Katie busy during half-term, I've been slowly working my way through all the recent finished projects and swaps, posting photos of everything that I have received or completed.

About 1/2 an hour ago I finished uploading the photos of everything that I received from my amazing ISE5 Angel, Martha.

Check out the results of Martha's hard work starting with this beautiful scarf in Rowan Felted Tweed. The scarf pattern is Eugen Buegler's 'Streaming Leaves Lace Scarf'. And it is DIVINE! It's so soft and squishy. Martha was a little concerned about the alpaca guard hairs but it's not a problem - it feels lovely and soft against my skin. Beautiful! I love it.

Martha also kindly included a second scarf, Edgar from the fall 2005 issue of Knitty knit in Silk Garden Lite, for Katie. I guess I could have claimed it for myself but I will probably end up borrowing it anyway and this way Katie feels spoiled too! She was seriously stunned that a stranger across the ocean remembered her in this way and she asked me to say that she "absolutely loves the colours and the pattern". Thanks Martha (from Katie!)

Another indication of Martha's thoughtfulness, is the undyed wool and Kool-Aid packages that she enclosed so that Katie and I could dye the wool together. How lovely is that!! Katie was very interested in testing the Kool-Aid for herself when I explained that we would be using it to dye wool and not drinking it! "Imagine what it does to your insides", she said! Kids. Lol.

The box was absolutely stuffed full of thoughtful little extras and I know that Martha & her hubby had a lot of 'fun' squeezing everything in. By no stretch of the imgaination was this a small box. There is enough fiber, yarn, beads and more to keep me going for months of projects!

Sewing: Bags & Totes

I'm still frantically trying to catch up on posting piccies of finished projects and here's a few project bags that I made recently to keep you going. Hopefully I'll have my ISE5 stuff online very soon.

The first bag is made using navy recycled linen and a pretty co-ordinating floral lining. The drawstring is made from Rowan Cotton Glace. I added a small fabric patch to the front of the bag to break up the solid colour without detracing away from the beautiful linen. This bag was sent to Blueadt in exchange for some gorgeous Rowan All Seasons cotton.

Next is Katie's project bag. I made this using a scrap of the linen fabric and some of the 'ladybird' fabric that I used to make Ladybird Linz's needle roll. Katie needed something simple that she could stuff full with knitting projects. I lined this in simple calico with a small pocket for notions.

Lastly is this blue bag that I made Anna for her Birthday as part of the Winter Birthday Swap on the Crafty Threads n Yarn forum at the beginning of December. It's unusual fabric in that's a fleece or flannel. The print is a blue toille and I used Simplicity Pattern (tbc). There is an external pocket in the same fabric and the inside is lined with calico fabric. I also enclosed a couple of Fat Quarters and two balls of lovely yarn in her birthday swap package.

More FO's and swap piccies coming soon including my ISE5 scarf and goodies! I've been a busy bee in January. Time to knuckle down for February as we're almost half way through - eek!

Swap: Dishcloth Swap on CTnY

I received my dishcloth a few weeks ago from Franney. And now my pal, Ladybird Linz has received hers.

I forgot to take a photo before I sent it and so I've pinched hers from the Forum. Sorry LBL! It's Yvonne's Double Dishcloth pattern and it's a free pattern available on the dishcloth boutique.

This was my first attempt at the Double Flower Dishcloth which I mucked up. And although my mistake is not obvious to the naked eye (and granted the dishcloth still looks fine) I wasn't happy with it and made another one in the hot pink. I'm glad I re-did it. Honestly, I'm not a perfectionist (much!)

I also enclosed a needle roll for LBL which was actually a prize for a draw I did back in November.

The fabric reminds me of ladybirds which I thought was perfect for this project. I also followed the ladybird/garden theme to the lining where I used a pretty floral print that I purchased off ebay before Christmas!

Inside the needle roll I included a highlighter pen (always useful!) and some wooden card toppers (not pictured).

I used Rowan Cotton Glace in a dark blue/denim colourway for the ties.

Swap: 'One Tiny Thing' on Craftster

I've just finished the 'One Tiny Thing' (OTT17) swap on Craftster. The swap is restricted to sending one item less than 4"x4" and no extras allowed. This was a tough remit to follow as I like to add little bits'n'bobs to my packages. Anyway, I restrained myself.

Firstly, here's the lovely coin purse that Sam sent me and I just love love love it.

Check out the embroidered fairy and her beautiful beaded wings! So simple yet so effective!

The outer is a lovely dark denim and the liner & zipper are a pink/lilac colour. Lovely! Thanks again Sam.

Swaps: Round Robin Exchange, January

I'm taking part in an ongoing Round Robin Exchange on the Crafty Threads n Yarn forum. Each participant has their own little pouch or bag which moves around the group each month containing goodies, being emptied and refilled by the next person on the list and passed on. The aim is to make use of items in our crafty/yarn stash and we're not allowed to spend more than £2 on new stuff for the contents.

This is the little bag I made using Opal Sock Yarn (Petticoat). It's about 4" tall from the base to the eyelets, and the base is about 3" across. The pattern we used was from SpinningFishwife's blog. In my rotten 'lurgy state last week I forgot to photograph the contents of my bag which I sent to Grannysmith. Once GS has received it, I'll try and pinch the photos from her blog!

I received my Round Robin bag for January last week from Cazzie:

a lovely piece of blue fabric with embossed stars; a crochet star flower bookmark; some star shaped shell buttons; and a packet of Milky Way stars.

In the background you can see Cazzie's Round Robin bag which was knit flat in a mitred square pattern. Aren't the colours lovely? I just pinched this photo of Cazzie's bag from the forum, isn't it clever!

Next month I will refill this bag with goodies especially chosen for the next person in the Round Robin.

Spinning: I've found someone...

I got an email earlier today from a lady on the island who is a spinner and a member of the local Guild. Yay!

I was so happy I practically burst into song. Although I must admit that I was a bit disappointed with the song choices: firstly the Cher classic, "I found someone", quickly followed by CeCe Peniston's boppy little number, "Finally". (I credit the recent lack of human contact and being 'woo woo' in the head for the unusual song choices.)

Needless to say I'm one step closer to learning to spin on a wheel. I'm very excited about the prospect of meeting a fellow enthusiast and will gratefully receive any help that she can send my way!!

Knitting: Purl Bee Mary Jane's

Aren't these little slippers just to die for. I just spied them on The Purl Bee's website.

I've been toying with the idea of making myself a pair of slippers for a few months now. Although I'm probably more suited to the felted clog style slipper rather than these little beauties due to the canal barge sized feet I've been blessed with, they'll definitely make a lovely present for someone special in your life.

Spinning: More questions than answers..

I really want to progress from spinning plain old merino and introducing other fibers and textures into my spinning. I do love you merino but where to start? Perhaps an inspirational bag of fibers and threads (which ones)? Or maybe even a spinner's swap? But how do you swap with somebody when all you have is plain old merino? Any ideas, anybody?

In search of inspiration, I started bloghopping through the Fiber Artists Bloggers ring which lead me to the Totally Tubular spinning kit. Now this is what I'm talking about. A medley of colours and textures, a veritable banquet of colourful fibery goodness to tickle your senses. Perfect!

I love the presentation of this kit and while it really isn't for me as I don't need another spindle right now, it sure is pretty to look at. The contents are close to what I'm looking for.

Do feel free to drop by with any comments and recommendations for this spinning noob. Maybe you could point me in the direction of a spinning swap due to take place, maybe??

Spindle spun fun!!

It's been a fun couple of weeks. I've been challenging myself to see how thin I can spin the yarn without breaking it. So far, the best I've made is a 25g skein which measures 80m. I haven't worked out the wpi yet but that's coming.

The Babe spindle can't cope with much more than about 6g of spun wool when it's spun so thin. I haven't tried spinning such thin wool on the wooden spindle yet and that'll be a project for another day.

For this skein I took the 4 blue singles (one pictured above) and plied each one back on itself. I then spit spliced each plied ball of wool to the other and then wound them into a skein on my arm.

Now all I need to do to finish off this skein is to give it a quick rinse to set the twist. I feel like I'm making REAL wool now. But it's hard work producing this much on the spindle as I'm using muscles I never knew I had.

Dishcloth Swap

January's Dishcloth swap is under way, the first swap of the year on the Crafty Threads n Yarn forum. Here's the dishcloth that I received from my secret spoiler....

I'm having great fun knitting up dishcloths and have just finished my 4th one this month. Aren't they addictive!!! I can't reveal my ones just yet as I don't want to spoil the surprise for my dishcloth swap pal. But all will be revealed soon though!

As per usual, Little Miss CB has jumped on the bandwagon and is churning out her own dishcloth as we speak. Bored with knitting scarves and swatches, she needed something more challenging to work on. And as expected, she's taken to knitting on dpns like she takes to everything else. Is there nothing this child can't do?

She was off sick earlier this week for a couple of days again, this time with an upset tummy. We're not sure what's causing it but it might be a food allergy (namely chocolate :( which she is not terribly happy about). But it seems to be settling down again. Anyway, this is what she did on one of her days off...

Pain is such a PAIN!

OMG I am in so much pain at the moment I want to cry!!! I've reached that stage where you get out of a chair issuing a mouthful of expletives as you exhale with the effort! You know the one: "holyfuckingshitjesuschristalmighty" (sorry but it's true).

BTW, I am issuing a READER BEWARE. From this point forward, you are likely to suffer from an extreme bout of 'down in the dumps' so read on at your peril.... Seriously, chocolate will not help you this time. You've been warned!

It doesn't help that I put on even more weight during 2007 which, in retrospect, was a fairly good indication that it was a bad year physically (& mentally) - the lack of exercise and mobility has taken its toll on my body. So on top of the original 3 stone that I should have lost sometime in the last decade, I've now got another 2 stone to contend with.

There. I've said it. Now I guess that makes it real - real enough to want to do something about it. I HAVE TO LOOSE at least 5 STONE, (but I'd be happy with 2!!) I really don't want to be discussing this in 4 years time when I'm forty!

The extra weight hasn't done my knees any favours either. The pain and swelling in my legs gradually got worse and worse during the latter half of 2007 but thankfully I can wear shoes (or boots) again from time to time.

My only saving grace over the past 5 years was that I could at least kneel or sit on the floor to play with Little Miss CB. Sadly that's no longer enough as she wants to play football at every given moment. I wish I could play with her more. If it wasn't for the crafting we do together, there wouldn't be that much to do at all. I never considered it before but I guess that's why she's so keen to have a go at the crafty stuff I do as it's 'our thing'.

I'm not going to dwell on any more negative stuff this evening. Afterall, I need something to do tomorrow night too. I'm off to do some more knitting on my bag for the 'Round Robin' on the CTnY forum.

My ISE5 pal is MIA and sadly no one has heard from her. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a teensy bit disappointed., however, the hostesses are looking for an angel for me.

I always make a point to stay in contact during swaps, even if things don't always go to plan. Afterall it's part of the fun writing to and teasing your pal. I just hope nothing bad has happened to my spoiler as it seems she has been a reliable swapper in previous exchanges.

Spinning: My story so far...

One of my goals for 2007 was to learn how to spin using a drop spindle. Top, bottom, mid whorl - didn't matter. I just wanted to learn. That's what I'm like. If I want to learn to do something, I can't rest until I've tried it at least once. Then, once if I enjoy it, I practically become addicted (hence the enormous number of craft projects I always seem to be working on).

I finally bought one when I saw that Cathie from the CTnY forum was selling hers at the end of November. It turns out, it's actually a really cool one - a total 'Babe'! Really, the company that makes these is called 'Babe' and they also make spinning wheels.

Anyway, the spindle comes with two discs so it can be converted into a top whorl, bottom whorl, a mid-whorl or a balkan spindle. You can use one disc for spinning singles and two discs for plying yarn and/or for heavier weight yarn. It has a 12" shaft and the discs are plastic.

Then for Christmas, Mr CB bought me a wooden spindle and 400g of roving from Uk Collect Fiber Works. Although I found this one easier to learn with, I like and use them both equally well.

It wasn't easy initially. I read some info online and watched some videos on YouTube, had a go, didn't like the results, then promptly sat back down again in front of the PC and started again from scratch.

This time it worked!! And I have to say that I'm finding the whole thing quite magical. It's just amazing how the leader thread catches the wool, how the twist travels up the drafted wool and hey presto, you've got yarn! Magical!!!

Thankfully I've got two spindles as Katie likes to play too!

As far as progress goes, here's some photos of the yarn that I've managed to spin since Christmas. I'm not going to post all the photos as they're on my Flickr but just so you can see what's been going on...

This is the first lot of spinning from front to back - the red one was my very first on Christmas night after a lovely day and lots of wine!

I think this picture below really shows my progress. The yarn on the left is the first attempt and the one on the right (resting on the knitting needle) is the 2nd attempt a few days later. I'm finding drafting the wool much easier now and although I have to do do this sitting down, I think I'm managing quite well.

The blue and red yarn is the first yarn that I plied.....

... and wound into a center pull ball. I really like the colours together!

I've had to improvise alot when it comes to spinning accessores: I've modified a cardboard box to use as a Lazy Kate and I use a cardboard tube as a Nostepinne for the center pull balls.

I don't even think I'll try skeining yarn until I get my hands on a Niddy Noddy, although I did see a really cool tutorial on how to make one using plumbing supplies over on Craftster! I guess I'll just have to get myself organised and get a few items into my Etsy shop. Then maybe I'll save enough money to buy some accessories!

Ok, you win! Here's the glorious lavender infused yarn, fabric, scarf and cat. Oops, sorry, the cat is mine! The smell of lavender from the talc included is just divine. It was a real pleasure to open the parcel!

Perhaps Mademoiselle Jade thought this lot was for her, as she didn't waste any time trying on the beautiful scarf and hogging the yarn!! Pah.

Of course, opening up presents can be exhausting and what better thing to do after you've been spoiled...

Dishcloth & Knitters Swaps

Dishcloths? Handknit dishcloths?! I used to wonder why oh why people bothered with these. What's the big deal, eh? But I've been blogging for almost two years now, and I think I've finally gotten past the initial 'why-oh-why' hump to see that they're actually quite good fun. Especially if you're like me and enjoy instant gratification projects.

Ouch! The words of my dad are ringing hard in my ears, "don't knock what you haven't tried". He used to say that a lot to me when we were growing up. And it's true.

So, with this new found interest in handknit dishcloths, I've signed up for my first dishcloth swap over on the CTnY forum. This is the theme for January, our first swap of 2008.

I hate socks!

I am a sock knitting failure! Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of hand knit socks. I even enjoy knitting with DPNs, the technique of toe ups and working on circular needles. I just don't enjoy making socks. However, I do ADORE sock yarn so there's definitely going to be lots of it in my future - just not for socks!! :)

The CTnY forum has a monthly sock challenge and at the end of the year, prizes for Gold, Silver & Bronze are awarded for the appropriate number of socks completed. These guys are amazing sock knitters - the Gold Prize winner is, LadybirdLinz; Silver went to Harrysmum and Bronze went to blogless Carolinne!.

Oh, almost forgot. There was a Wooden Spoon prize for those who never managed to actually complete a pair of socks. Guess who won that one? Yours truly, me! The amazing thing is that although it's the 'wooden spoon', I actually get some yummy scrummy yarn from the amazing Anni. And here's my button to prove it! I'll be 'wearing' it with pride (or at least my blog will)!

I've had a terrible time these past few weeks trying to get online so as it seems to be working for now, I thought I would squeeze one final post in before midnight.

Like everybody else in the modern world, the past few weeks have been quite hectic for us. I would like to say I was busy out shopping and partying but that's not the case. Steven has managed to squeeze a record number of travels abroad, and Katie has been ill a total of 3 times in the past 6 weeks. Needless to say we're all feeling a little worse for wear.

Thankfully the New Year brings hope of a fresh start!

We finally managed to get the Christmas tree decorated..... on Christmas Eve! Considering it's usually done and dusted by the 8th I have to admit that it nearly didn't get put up! Many of you already know my situation, and understand that motivating yourself to do the simplest of tasks can be so very difficult when depression is involved. Thankfully I have a very persistent, helpful and loving husband.

I got some wonderful presents for Christmas but my favourites are the Mason Dixon knitting book (I'm about 3 years behind on this one!), the Amigurumi book by Elizabeth Dogherty and best of all, a drop spindle and 400g of wool roving! I haven't had a chance to knit or crochet, but I have been spinning bit by bit since Christmas day....

Little by little I've got the hang of it and now even Katie has jumped on the 'spindle' wagon! She's done a great job too. I've put some photos of her on Flickr if you want to check out our progress. Here's an action shot of Katie for now.

Right, I'm off to have some of my birthday cake, a glass of chardonnay and to finally open my birthday presents. Katie is merrilly playing with her cousins and Steven & his mum are already vegging out in the living room. I wonder if we'll make it past 11pm... ;)

My Etsy Shop: update - Needle Felted Goodies!

I'm listing these two little critters this evening in my Etsy shop.

The purple bugeyed bird is a petite 2" small. Needle felted in lovely merino wool, the colour is more of a mauve than the bluey purple pictured.

If you're feeling a little grumpy or know somebody who does, how about a teeny Grinch to bring a tiny grin to their chops! At only 2.5" small, this little Grinch is not going to spoil your Christmas spirit!

UPDATE: Mr Grinch has gone bye-byes!

Both of these are sold as seen. I can add either a brooch pin, keychain or hanging thread. I think the Grinch would make a fun addition to your Christmas tree or even to the car rear view mirror!!!

Swap: Christmas Decoration on CTnY

As it's been received I think it's safe to update this post with the who, what, when and why of this photo.

We had a Christmas Decoration swap over on the Crafty Threads n Yarn forum and this was what I made for my swap pal, Jacky. If you scroll down the post a bit you'll see the fairy hanging on Jacky's tree (as well as her two beautiful dogs standing in front!)

It's basically a spare wooden curtain ring, over which I crochet some DB Aran Tweed. The fairy is made as all my fairies except I didn't use floss or flowers for her dress - it's made from a piece of a fleecy scarf that I picked up in the Charity shop.

Her boots are needle felted and she's holding a little wooden heart (button). There was a bit of foot stomping when I sent her off so I've got another one in the works for Little Miss CB!

Exchange: ISE5 Scarf Finished & Sent

Everything is in the post today. Ok, it's 4 days passed the send by date but better late than never!!! ;)

The scarf is an adaptation of a pattern from Scarf Style (name to follow as I can't find the book right now!). I used 3 balls of Debbie Bliss Cathay Silk and could probably have used the 4th as my pal likes long scarves, but I was worried that the weight of the yarn would be too much. Having said that, the cabled sections are quite well tensioned so the only droopy bit might be the st st section in the middle.

I love the feel of this yarn. And although it nearly drove me to tears as it twisted back on itself while I knit with it, I would probably use it again. I'm a fan of cotton or cotton blend yarns as they're kind to my sensitive skin although I would love to be able to wear thick woolly scarves and jumpers with ease.

I popped in a few little extras - some Hope & Greenwood Hot Chili Dark Chocolate Buttons, the 4th ball of DB Cathay Silk, Stitch Markers and a packet of tissues.

The Hope & Greenwood chocolate is interesting. I had a sample of it at the shop down town and while the dark chocolate is just to die for (scrummy!), the chili afterburn was an interesting but not-to-be-repeated-for-me experience. I hope my pal likes everything and that it arrives safely!!!

This is the 2nd patch I've made for the Embroidery Patch Swap on Craftster. After a quick rinse and a nice hot iron, she'll be winging her way to the US on Monday.

I've used mainly stem stitch for the outlines, satin stitch for the eyes and chain stitch for the body and shoes. I thought that the french knots would add a little interest to the bobble on her hat (I didn't want her looking like Santa Claus!)

Patches number 1 and 2 are for the US. I'll be working on patches 3 and 4 next week. They're destined for the UK and will be posted in time for the end of November deadline.

I'm taking part in my second Craftster swap. This one is a swap of embroidered patches sized between 3" sq. and 10" sq. We're split into groups and each member sends one patch to the other members in their group. I've got four to make and this is the first one.

No-Sew Cushion

Katie and I made this cute little cushion a couple of weeks ago. It's a quick no-sew project which requires very few skills - measuring, cutting, and tying knots. We managed to complete the cushion in one evening.

Katie's eager to learn how to use a sewing machine but I'm not quite ready to let her loose on the eccentric and ever so slightly geriatric Singer 507. Perhaps when I get my new one for Thingmas (wink wink, nudge nudge, 'nuff said!) I can show her then.

The cushion front is a flannel doggy print which I picked up on e-bay from a lady who was de-stashing due to a move. The back of the cushion is made from a panel cut out of one of my old T-shirts. Katie chose a 12" cushion pad for this project. If you didn't have a cushion pad, you could always stuff a store bought plain cushion cover with poly fill and then cover this with the knotted cushion cover.

Here's a link to one example, in case you know someone who fancies a go! Aim for flannel or fleece fabrics - basically anything that won't fray should work. :)

This is my traditional Mother Christmas - made from Calico cloth and Alpaca fleece.

Her dress is made from green felt and her apron is a piece of gingam fabric that I recycled from an old pair of summer trousers.

I have trimmed her apron with white broderie lace and a white satin ribbon. Her dress hem and cuffs are trimmed with Christmas themed gold braid.

Mother Christmas' hair has been needle felted using Alpaca fleece. I also used the Alpaca fleece to create a softer, kinder face. The eyes and mouth are stitched using embroidery thread/floss.

I made her glasses using silver coloured beading wire and my round nosed pliers. They are attached with a small amount of embroidery thread.

I had two more items to enter but didn't manage to get them finished on time. The closing date & time was midnight 31 October US Eastern Time (which was approx 5am here in the UK). Sadly my camera died before I could photograph the other two items (major bummer). But at least I got this little lady entered on time. I think I need to take a time management course one of these days as things are a little bit disorganised at the moment. I'll post some piccies of the other softies once I find some batteries for the flipping camera!

Feltedhandbag Workshop - patterns via PDF on ebay.co.uk

This might be new news. Heck it may even be old news. But it is definitely good news. The Feltedhandbag workshop are now selling their amazing felted bag patterns via PDF on Ebay.co.uk. YAY!

Yes I know they've been selling their patterns for some time now (see their blog), but there's something psychological about being able to buy these patterns via your local hangout - in my case Ebay! Every transaction on Ebay is another boost for my profile afterall!

The patterns cost $8 each which is less than £4 sterling at the moment. A bargain!

For those of you not familiar with their work, the Felted Handbag Workshop have brought us some wonderful bags over the past few years, some of which are available for free on blogland, such as:

Little Slip of a Thing which was published in Knitty's Fall '06 issue, The Balloon Bag (an excellent starter pattern) and also the Little Coco Bag, all of which I've made or attempted during my knit-to-felt craze last year.

My favourites at the moment are the Felted Entrelac bag and the Felted Modular Triangles bag. Guess that's something else I can add to my Thingmas wishlist. :) :) :)

Sewing, knitting & winter craft projects

Looks like two crafting activites for the long winter nights ahead have been sorted.

Little Miss CB is now happily plodding along with stocking stitch and has started to chart basic knit patterns for 6" squares. She's also discovered the joy of knitting with quality wool and not those 50p balls of crappy acrylic yarn that I started her off with. Yarn snob! Hopefully we'll come up with a few squares between us for a blankie or throw. (I'd be glad with a cushion but she's an ambitious child and one doesn't want to quash her enthusiasm!)

Darling daughter has also expressed an interest in learning how to embroider. I can't remember exactly how old I was when I learned, but I was probably a big younger than she is, based on where we were living at the time.

And here's the pick of embroidery transfers that will get us through the dreaded dark months. I scored these off e-bay a few weeks ago and thankfully they've been released from their postal prison. There's a mixed bag of embroidery threads still captive in the postal system and hopefully that will arrive before too long.

Most of them appear to be reusable and they are all in perfect condition. The one piece which really intrigues me is the one to the top right. It appears to be a combined embroidery / applique transfer. I'm not sure how to go about it as there's no instructions (the only downside to not having the original magazines that these patterns were featured in). But it will be fun trying to figure it out. An interesting creative puzzle to mull over.

I also had to have this cream square table cloth with the crinoline lady. It was a moment of blind nostalgia and resembled one of the first pieces I ever worked on.

Who knows, when we emerge from the darkness in Spring we should have a few nice knit and embroidered pieces to share with the world. Guess that means it's almost time to go into crafting hibernation! lol.

Knitting: Scarves

I logged on earlier this morning to post some photos of various WIPs. However, as usual I got distracted by the new widgets and hacks on Hackosphere, which resulted in me tinkering the blog layout.

I can't believe it's been at least 5 months since I made any changes to the blog layout and boy have I missed out. There's some really cool widgets out there - if I get the opportunity I'll post my finds on the Knit1blogtoo blog. Anyway, my blog is not quite how I want it yet but at least it's presentable.

As far as knitting goes, I've been fairly good this week. I've made good progress on my mini Clapotis which I'm knitting with the STR yarn that my ISE4 pal gifted me earlier this year. It's so lovely to knit with and the colours are so vibrant. It's enough to lift anybody's depression. Maybe I should have a monthly subscription!!! :D Not sure if it's cheaper than Prozac but it does put a grin on yer chin.

Having knit this much of the mini Clapotis, I would love to have a go at a full sized one. I do have a few skeins of Arucania Atacama Alpaca knocking about my stash drawer so perhaps they will work. I was saving them for the Lady Eleanor Entrelac Shawl from Scarf Style but there's not enough! And I want the full monty of Lady Eleanor - right down to the knotted fringe. The works!

Some folk have been surprised by my use of the STR for the mini Clapotis but to be honest, I've resigned myself to the fact that I am never ever going to finish even just one pair of socks so the sock yarn has to be put to good use (not that I have much). And, as I don't seem to get on with Laceweight (a kind e-friend even sent me some Malabrigo laceweight to fondle ) I imagine there'll be a few sock yarn scarves floating around this place by Thingmas.

The other scarf I'm working on is this cabled beauty for my ISE5 pal. Not terribly complicated but about as much as my tiny brain can cope with. It's 'Vintage Velvet' from Scarf Style and I'm knitting it in Debbie Bliss Cathay. I think the colourway is Periwinkle.... I cast on for this last night and judging by my progress, I should be finished in good time for the send out date. The nice thng is, the cable pattern is reversible and very easy to memorise. Did someone say MEMORISE???? Yup. Me Memorise? Imagine that. Pah! It's a straight forward rib pattern with a 6 stitch cable that 'twists' every row 5 and 16.

It's been years since I knit cables and I'm not quite sure why I've been avoiding them - especially since I've been back knitting for 18 months AND they're not nearly as scary as some lace patterns out there! Although it probably would have been better to use bamboo needles (Santa I hope you're watching) with the Cathay silk rather than my metal ones. The work is all terribly slippery and I'm only a sneeze away from it all sliding off - picture yarn diarrohea!

For those of you who have been watching me swatch for the heartstrings beaded scarf for my ISE pal, I really didn't have any yarn in that did it justice which also matched the beads in my stash. For now, it's going to be another one for my 'to knit' pile.

One thing that I'm not terribly please about is the way the Cathay silk comes out of the ball. It's lovely to knit with and has a glorious sheen to it. But it flippin' twists and tangles like mad. Has anybody else had a similar problem? Anyone?

I'm off for a bacon buttie now - yum!! Penelope pig, close your eyes pet.

Well, I finally got round to it and have set up a shop on Etsy.

There's nothing in it at the moment apart from one custom order.

But I'm hoping to get some bits in there over the coming weeks. It's not going to pay off the overdraft, but maybe it will pay for more fabrics and wool......

I don't want to jinx things so I'll keep it brief. The plans are to include some flower fairies, maybe a pig (or 4), some new pincushions and a few surprises.

Katie Knits - Pink Scarf

This time last year Katie was under the misguided impression that knitting was for grannies, much to my frustration. However, this summer she proved herself to be quite a good little knitter!

She received a scarf kit for her birthday from one of her friends - one of those kits with big fat needles 20mm+ and chunky wool. While we were away for a week in August, she brought the kit with her and made the scarf in a few hours one day. And being the kind natured kid that she is, she gave it to her cousin for her 18th birthday that week. Check out the smiles.

Knitting: ISE5 Swatches

Here's the first of 4 swatches for the Heartstrings Beaded Scarf that I plan on making for my pal. I'm aiming for a scarf that's about 6" wide(ish) and 50-60" long. The actual pattern is for a scarf 11"x60".

This first swatch is some King Cole Merino DK that I have left over from ISE4.

I'm not planning on using this actual yarn - I'm more interested in the Merino DK and how it knits up. I have a Jaeger Merino DK in mind if I decide to go with this weight.

Although this scarf calls for laceweight, I personally prefer working with DK or 4ply. I don't know why, but I seem to get on better with them. Maybe it's because the work grows quicker. I have been considering some Lane Borgosesia laceweight from Jannette's Rare Yarns on e-bay. This would be so perfect for my pal but it's LACEWEIGHT! Maybe once I've swatched (till my fingers bleed) I'll have a better idea.

The next swatch will be Rowanspun 4ply. I'm about 1/4 way through the swatch and will post piccies once done. Already I can see that the texture of the Rowanspun may detract from the pattern and beads. Let's wait and see...
The pattern repeat on this scarf is so simple yet very effective. In fact you could modify the pattern to accommodate any of your favourite yarns.

Knitting: ISE5 Update

This is my 3rd International Scarf Exchange (ISE) and once again it feels like my first. I start off with the best of intentions - researching, stalking, planning. Then indecision kicks in, followed by a confidence crisis, topped off with a pinch of performance anxiety.

Best intentions are fine but they're not very productive. So having coasted through a myriad of emotions and possibilities this week, I think I may have narrowed it down - the pattern anyway. I'm desperate to have a go at a lace scarf which incorporates beads. Sadly I cannot cope with a lace pattern with more than a 4 row repeat. This is due in part to my impatient nature and also down to the medication I take. Roughly translated, I have the attention span of a gnat!

Lace knitting is supposed to be intuitive (I had a discussion with myself about this when I made the Backyard Leaves scarf) and many people who dare to attempt the beautiful shawls out there just amaze me. It's not a complete loss since I can identify where the YOs are and whether to use a K2tog or a SSK on the small pattern repeats, but that's my limit.

At this point, my plan is to cannibalise some of the lace patterns that I like. I think I've narrowed it down to two contenders - Yarnharlot's snowdrop shawl - I think the center panel would make a nice panel for a scarf, and Sivia Harding's diamond lace bookmark (which looks coincidentally a lot like the Angel Pearls Beaded scarf.

I had thought about making the Heartstrings Beaded Lace Scarf II (left) for my pal but I really don't think I could cope with it just now. It's certainly one I would love myself and I fell in love with it when I saw a few versions made during the ISE4. Maybe next time round I'll tell my pal that I like it alot!

One other scarf/shawl that I wouldn't mind trying (eventually) is the Lady Eleanor Entrelac Shawl from Scarf Style. There's something magical about it - perhaps it's the yarn, or the knotted fringe. I'm not sure, but I do love it.

The next hurdle is yarn. I'm trying to decide whether a lacy whispy scarf with beads or a heaver DK weight scarf with beads. I'm working on some swatches at the moment (yes, me, swatching, amazing!) with everything from laceweight to DK. Guess I'll wait and see which one turns out best.

OMG I forgot about the pins. Doh! I made some shrink plastic pins to decorate the pincushion, using this tutorial on the Weewonderfuls website. BTW, I pinched Gilraen's photos and put them together below - thanks for sharing Gilraen!

I decorated the shrink plastic with chalks, and rubber stamped some flowers, hearts, dresses and lace using Stayzon ink. As I was short on time I used my paper punches to cut out some shapes (the flower and butterfly punch are about 2cm in diameter to give you an idea of size).

I used gelly roll and souffle pens to add more colour and depth. But you can also use colouring pencils, gel pens, permanent markers etc... Just remember that the colours intensify as the plastic shrinks so less is definitely more.

If you're having trouble applying the colour to the plastic, use either the rough side or take a piece of low grade sand paper and rub it gently across the plastic a few times. This gives the colour something to grab onto.

You can shrink these in the oven but I did them one by one using my heat gun. Basically you pierce each shape with a pin and push the shape all the way to the pin head. When you apply the heat and the plastic shrinks it sticks to the pin. Well, nearly always it does!

I think my favourite is the dress. Actually it's the flower. No wait, it's the butterfly.... Oh well. I think they all look pretty good actually. ~~It's just a shame the photo quality is so cr*p! That's what I get for rushing.~~ Thanks to Gilraen's photos and a little TLC using paint.net these photos are much better than the one I originally posted!

I am sooooo happy to report that my pal, Gilraen, has received her pincushion, safe and sound. I've been dying to share this on my blog and I have literally been chomping at the bit today hoping and praying that it would arrive safely, especially in light of the impending postal strike.

Swap: Pincushion

We've just had a pincushion swap over on the Crafty Threads 'n Yarns forum. Everyone has begun to receive theirs and hopefully my pal should receive hers today or tomorrow.

I had so much fun with this swap and made far more pincushions than I care to mention! Lol. I'll post some piccies of the actual pincushion I sent shortly, but in the meantime, check out the teaser photo on the right to whet your appetite.

And check out this little lovelie that I was sent by my swap pal. Isn't it fab! The aida is backed with a pink piece of felt and my pal added a little silky tassle for embellishment.

Swap: first Craftster swap finished!

I've just finished my commitment on my first Craftster swap - the 'I want what I can't make' swap. It's been torture making things and not being able to share them on here for fear of being found out. It wasn't a secret swap so my pal knew everything about me and I had to keep my gifts on the DL.

So, here's the things I made for my pal. I had a really great time making them and learned some great new techniques in the process. Enjoy!!

BAGSKET: made in canvas and lined with calico. The drawstring top is part of a recycled linen blend fabric. The tutorial for making the bagsket are available on Foofangle with links to the original designer. The embroidery pattern is one of many that is available free on Knitting-And.com.

NEEDLE ROLL: made in canvas and lined in calico (as the bagsket), panel of Amy Butler's Lotus on the front and edged with blue grosgrain ribbon.

MINI QUILT: the flower fairy is a design taken in a book at home (title to follow). I embroidered the fairy onto a piece of recycled white fabric. I felt bad sending just the embroidered panel to my pal so I made it into this little quilt or wall hanging. I'm not entirely happy with it as a quilt but what the hey!

FABRIC POSTCARD: Fabric scraps, heavyweight interfacing, zig zag stitch on my trusty old Singer 507.

FABRIC FLOWER: made using my treasured & favourite fabrics - the tutorial is available on Mollychicken. It's a very simple concept but every scrap of fabric is used up - I even used the very last strip of fabric to make the flower fairy's skirt.

FLOWER FAIRY: made the same as all my other fairies, the hair is mohair that has been twisted around wooden skewers which were immersed in hot boiling water and then freezing cold water. Once the yarn was dry, unwind the yarn from the skewers and you'll have lovely curly doll hair! The skirt is made using the leftover fabric from the fabric flower above.

It's time for ISE5 (International Scarf Exchange, 5). I just got in by the skin of my teeth yesterday with the cut off date being today!!!

I don't know where time is going at the moment but everything seems to be whizzing by in a blur. It only seems to speed up even more once September has passed and before you know it we're on the home straight to 'Thingmas'.

I wish I could manipulate space and time like Hiro Nakamura from Heroes (did you catch the re-run of episodes 1-9 at the weekend on the Beeb?).

Innocent Smothies - the big knit 2007

Following on from last years success, the Innocent Smoothies woolly hats campaign for 2007 is up and running.

If you want to learn more then drop by their website for further information. Last year they raised £115,000 for Age Concern and received 230,000 little woolly hats. This year they're aiming for 400,000 hats.

Photography: It's better with a light tent

A few months back I started photographing my finished projects using a white sheet as a backdrop. Personally I think it makes a huge difference and showcases the projects in the best light possible.

Well, it's time to go one better than a plain old white sheet. No more time wasted setting up the scene, pinning the white sheet onto the chair/sofa/wall/child, positioning for the right light etc... What you need is a light tent (or soft box, or mini photo studio). A light tent will enable you to take better quality photos of your projects or goods for sale, while controlling the amount of light.

Sewing: Hand Embroidered Girly Girl

I know I'm jumping the gun here as I have yet to post about our lovely holiday. But that can wait. This can't.

I'm working on a swap at the moment and I've been going dizzy trying to come up with an angle to make the project more interesting. The myriad examples of naive embroidery on the web prompted me to do some stitchery goodness of my own. Granted my Girly Girl is not 'primitive' enough for the style I was after but she serves the purpose.

She's also not an original drawing. I got the image from the pink gift bag which I photocopied and then traced using my tiny light box and a HB pencil.

I kept the design simple so that I have enough time to work some more motifs into the scheme, without having to stay up night and day to get the whole thing finished. The fabric is simply white cotton from an old blouse that I recycled (yep, still recycling/ refashioning/ reconstructing - call it what you will!).

That's it for now. Sorry it's rushed but I've got to get back to work (of course when I say work I don't mean WORK Work, I mean crafty stuff!). Lol.

I'm trying to persuade the little ankle biter to go swimming tomorrow with her pals so I can have a few hours to catch up with blogland and emails. In the meantime, it's great to be back. I love Love LOVE my bed. I'll catch up with you all soon and thanks for all the lovely comments and birthday wishes for Katie aka 'the ankle biter', aka 'little miss CB'.

Week's holiday

Many of you already know but for those of you who don't, we're going away for a week. We're not going off island (thank God), just down south like last year. I do hope the weather improves soon as it feels like it's been raining forever!

It's like falling in love again....

I love that sense of achievement when you finally figure out something that has been haunting you. Something that you know deep down in your soul you should do, you want to do, but don't seem to be able to do. That 'falling in love' feeling.

Well, that's how I'm doing right about now. I don't know how long it will last. I don't care really. I'm just really pleased that I've sussed it. Sussed what I hear you ask? Why, thank you for asking. I've sussed toe up socks on a circular needle, that's what!!

Here's the fruit of my labour thus far. It doesn't look like much. But is is. Honest. I've never really made it much past the ribbing before. Not sure why but it never felt right. But this method does.

Now I'm off to knit me, (well Little Miss CB) some socks. I figure I've got two balls of Opal and one skein of STR so that should keep me busy next week when we're on hols down south. I'm so naieve yet ambitious - you've got to admire the determination. Ok some would call it pig-headedness and to them I say oink! oink!

Bargain Pins &

I don't know whether to be pleased or worried about my excitement, but I only paid 50p for each of these circs in the Hospice shop in town. I've now got a full range of sizes from 2mm up to 10mm. Me happy! :)

Now I just need to make myself a new needle roll for my circs and dpn needles. :D

Funnily enough, I have just finished sorting out my fabric stash, half of which is featured right, which includes fat quarters from Amy Butler, Heather Bailey and Michael Miller.

I'm still deconstructing lots of clothes ready to be refashioned or recycled. News and updates will follow soon. Perhaps I should consider rebranding my blog - how does the name 'Thriftybernie' grab ya? :D

Knitting WIP: Lake Park Hat

In recent weeks, I've spent a little while each evening working on the Lake Park Hat by Marnie MacLean. It's an interesting knit for me - anything other than stocking stitch is a challenge and requires immense concentration (personally I blame my poor attention span on the medication)!!!

The wool is Arucania Atacama, one of 6 skeins I received as part of a swap for a needle roll a while back. I love the colours, and how the slipped stitches pick out the various colour changes. I'm hoping that when it's finished and blocked, the stitches will tidy themselves up.

Progress is slow (but that's just me) and I imagine I'll be working on this puppy for a few more weeks to come.

Swaps: "I Want What I Can't Make" swap on Craftster

I signed up for my first Craftster Swap the other week - the "I want what I can't make" swap! Sign ups are closed now and we've just been allocated our swap pals.

It's such a cool idea for a swap. You get the opportunity to list crafts, techniques or items that you are unable to make or do, and your swap pall will make you something from that list. And so on for each person and their swap pal.

I'm itching to get started and will post some progress photos once taken (subtle hints and teasers to follow soon - I want to maintain some of the surprise for my pal)! Mwahahahahaha.

While we're on the subject of Craftster, check out these girlie dresses when you can. The first one is reconstructed from a mans shirt. And just to show that nothing goes to waste, the sleeves have been turned into matching pants! This is a cute overload.

This second dress is made up of patchwork squares, stitched together in rows, and then tiered on top of each other. Isn't it adorable! Similar twirly patchwork dresses are for sale on Etsy.

Knitting FO: FLORA from Knitty

Gosh, it seems like ages since I blogged about knitting. There haven't been many FOs to blog about since I finished Backyard Leaves for ISE4 a few months back! That's not to say that I don't have anything on the needles at the moment.... I do. But I seem to be spending a lot of time starting new projects and then frogging them. I guess that's what I deserve for being an impulsive crafter. Maybe if I spent a little time thinking projects through, I would stand a hope in hell of finishing them. Hopefully this knitting indecisiveness will soon pass!

Back to FLORA from Knitty. This is a sweet litle scarf(ette) which I knit up in a few short hours last weekend. It's an instant gratification project (we like those) and ideal for those days in the autumn when the weather starts to turn and you need a little extra coverage.

I used about 1.5 balls of Patons Washed Haze - which is a cotton/acrylic combo. It's very soft against the skin and not at all difficult to knit with.

The scarf is basically a simple stocking stitch pattern with a seedstitch border, separated with a row of eyelets. The flower is knit in sections with each petal worked individually in the seed stitch pattern. The stamens are clever little cords which are twisted in situ and I could probably have done with adding a few more.

The flower is detachable: one large button secures the scarf, while two smaller buttons on the back of the flower hold it on the scarf (use two of the eyelets as buttonholes). I'm not entirely pleased with my choice of button but it was the best I could do at the time. Looking at it now, I think a natural looking or wooden button would look better.
