Christmas Lantern Parade

There's lots going on at Little Miss CB's school over the next two weeks in the run up to their Christmas holidays. Everything from crafts, theatrical groups, choir performances, baking, parties and a school disco. Personally I think the highlight will be the Christmas Lantern Parade on Friday 15th December.

I think this is a picture of last year's parade. It's the only one I could find.

I spent 3 hours in the school today, helping kids make their lanterns for the parade. The lanterns are made from willow which the children cut and build into a pyramid shape. Once the structure is strong enough, it is then covered with tissue paper and a latex 'type' glue.

Instead of candles, the children have been given Glow sticks which us helpers suspended inside each lantern. When the parade is taking place, each child will carry their own lantern, suspended from a 6ft tall bamboo. Just to give you an idea of size, here's a picture of Miss CB's lantern - look at the size of this puppy!

I'm planning on popping down to the school next weekend and making one myself but I'll have to wait and see how I feel on the day. It's hard work on your back as the tables are so low in the school. But the pain aside, it was a fun morning.

Weather permitting, the parade should be a lovely sight.
