ISE4 - Progress on Lace Scarf (not Backyard Leaves)

It would seem that I have had a major breakthrough with the lace yarn I purchased at the beginning of this exchange. I finally tried out all the lace patterns that I liked and found one that really suits the yarn. I was also having difficulty finding the right size needle - the scarf was either knitting up too dense or too loose so it took some time to get it right.

The ball of yarn in the picture above is the nearest I can get to the true colours of the yarn. I love the way the colours of the yarn rise and fall with the stitches. I was worried that the yarn colours would look ghastly as can happen with variegated yarns and lace, but the colour repeats are fairly short (every 6" I think), and as they're all different shades of blue it doesn't look too bad.

In the meantime, I've made good progress on my Backyard Leaves scarf and it's simply a question of sending my pal whichever scarf I finish first. Although, I'm leaning more towards the lacy scarf as she lives in a fairly 'tropical' climate.

In a strange turn of events it seems that working on Backyard Leaves has helped me get to grips with all the YOs and left/right leaning decreases on the Gypsy Rose scarf above. So much so, I am able to work on this lace scarf without referring to the pattern. I admit it's only a 2 line pattern (well that's a big thing for me) but at least I can now recognise when to do a YO and when to do the S2K1PSSO without following the pattern! I'm learning, I'm learning.

Wow, good for you! I've just figured out this year why you'd want a stitch to lean one way or another. I've got to be sneaking up on lace at some point, right? And I didn't know variegateds in lace were bad.... so much to learn.

Carrie,

Oh you know that lace is gonna get hold of you sometime soon. Only 6 months ago (or thereabouts) I was voicing my opinions on lace and how much I 'disliked' things like the swallowtail shawl etc...

My first lace project was the Liesel Scarf from Yummy Yarns. It's a lovely scarf but then lace doesn't have to be complicated if you don't want it to be! I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for that first lace project!
